JUNE 26, WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Following today's mark-up of the Lower Health Care Costs Act of 2019 in the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP), the Coalition Against Surprise Medical Billing issued the following statement:
“We commend the leadership of Chairman Alexander, Sen. Murray and the Senate HELP Committee for their efforts to protect millions of Americans from egregious, unfair surprise medical bills. The Title I reforms included as part of the Lower Health Care Costs Act of 2019 would expand essential consumer protections to more than 181 million Americans who receive their insurance through employer-sponsored coverage and would establish a fair, market-based approach...
Ever Hear of an Out-of-Network Chef?
A major new advertising campaign from the Coalition Against Surprise Medical Billing highlights the unfair and unreasonable practice of surprise medical billing. American patients and families can’t afford these out-of-control bills from out-of-network providers – and they shouldn’t have to. It's unfair for consumers who are on the receiving end of a bill that can...

While closing the loophole that allows out-of-network providers to charge patients exorbitant rates at in-network facilities is a critical first step, creating a new system...
The Not-So-Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Surprise Medical Billing
A sharp stomach pain in the middle of the night. A knee bent the wrong way on the soccer field. A blinding headache out of nowhere in the middle of the workday. An ambulance ride to the nearest emergency room. It’s in times like these that Americans and their families are most vulnerable – and most vulnerable to surprise medical bills.
When patients experience health emergencies, they shouldn’t have to worry if the doctor they’re seeing at their in-network hospital is actually out-of-network and that they’ll be charged an exorbitant bill for care when they had no choice of treatment....
